I have written about seedling trays before and I have tried them all (I'm curious); but there's a relatively new one that attracted my attention: Seedling Tray with Lid.
When I first saw it, the price was a bit higher for my budget, so I waited. Months later, the price went down significantly so I grabbed the chance to buy five from sweetshop.my; I can say that it was one of my best purchases yet. I've used it for three cycles of seedlings and decided to buy 10 more from different shop, the packaging delivery was very poor so I decided not to name the shop.
1. It's 3-in-1. The tray comes with three parts; the tray for seedlings, the tray for water and the cover. You can use either the seedling tray only for seeds that require just moist condition; or seedling + water trays for seedlings that require ample water; or all of them for seedlings that needs the cover to trap the transpirational water loss thus maintaining high humidity in its environment.

2. Good for cuttings. I've had more success with cuttings using this tray than any other trays; mainly because of the water tray and the cover.

3. The size is just nice. Seedling trays generally comes in large number of holes which makes sense seeing that not all seeds will germinate thus the number of seeds that are being germinated typically more than needed. However, I normally germinate my seeds in an old plastic case (e.g. KFC's whipped potato casing, the plastic trays use in supermarket to pack cut chicken, fish, meat, vegetables etc.) and planted the germinated ones in a seedling tray (I wouldn't recommend for everyone because it needs delicate touch a.k.a careful a.k.a fussy though I find the whole process to be therapeutic). So, I don't need seedling trays with that many holes, I even cut up my oldest tray into smaller pieces so it's easy for me to use. Seedling tray with lid for me is just perfect, the number of holes is neither too big nor too small 👍.

It can't be all good...
Yes, it has a downside. In comparison to other seedling trays, this seedling tray is a bit flimsy and vulnerable to sharp tools, edges or even nails. One of mine was torn by a one-year old baby; it's still functional, just torn. I used plastic spoon when dealing with this tray. (p/s: one of the best plastic spoons I've used is from McDonald, followed by Texas Chicken; the porridge's spoon is durable and last longer than any other plastic spoons from any other fast-food restaurants).
The flimsiness caused my second order to be very disappointing as four of them were badly damaged when arrived; they are still usable after a bit gentle tweaking, but still disappointing.

In conclusion
Despite of the flimsy seedling tray, I am truly happy with this purchase. This tray has quickly become my favorite tray especially with herbs' and veggies' cuttings. If I were to buy this tray again, I'd buy it from the original shop; sweetshop.my. The shop packed my trays nicely; the trays were stacked, making it more durable, and put in a cardboard thus ensuring the safety of my seedling trays.Stacked seedling trays |
